History :
Before the city of Sapporo was established, it was home to the Ainu people who are the indigenous people of Japan. The birth of the city was offically recognised in 1868 by the Meiji government after deciding that the original city at the port of Hakodate was unsuitable for defence and further development. Sapporo was one of the cities involved in the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the Sapporo Dome was constructed in 2001 to host 3 of the world cup games.
