The Niagara falls and the river is a legacy of the last ice age in the world and was formed towards the end of the Wisconsin Glaciation estimated some 12000 years ago.
The first sighting of the Niagara falls made known to the world was by French explorer Samuel de Champlain where members of his team reported the sighting during his exploration of Canada in 1604. Tourism became popular in the 18th century and soon became its main industry around the area.
